Introduction. Before the beginning of the perestroika processes in our country, large industrial enterprises maintained and supervised a large number of socio-cultural facilities, forming specific neighborhoods within cities. Later, many enterprises were privatized and their owners became private businesses. Today, large business plays a significant role in the economy of regions and cities. How much is big business involved in the management of the city and in what forms is its influence realized? The purpose of the article is to analyze modern forms of participation of large business in city management, formation and development of the urban environment.
Materials and methods. The work is based on an analysis of the works of domestic and foreign authors who study big business and its impact on social processes. Statistical materials and press materials are used. The empirical basis is the analysis of 8 cases of large businessmen of the Sverdlovsk region, the forms of their influence on urban development are considered.
Results and conclusions. It has been established that the participation of large business in the management of the city is diverse and significant, it affects all spheres of city life. Participation manifests itself both directly (social investments in urban projects, municipal-private partnerships, participation in strategic planning and prolongation of development strategies, charity, sponsorship, construction of new cities) and indirectly (influences by the very fact of its existence) through job creation, cooperation with smaller firms and organizations, is a source of financial revenues to the city treasury through the taxation mechanism, forms transport and logistics flows, affects the environment, and shapes the image of the city.
Discussion. The influence of big business on the management of the city should not be assessed as exclusively positive, it also has its negative sides. Businesses have their own goals, and authorities should pursue a focused and thoughtful policy to attract large businesses to manage the city on a mutually beneficial basis. Big business should be more actively involved in the development of urban development strategies and the initiative of big business to build new cities should be supported at the legislative and informational levels.
